What Is Flow?

"Flow Temple is the fast track to Jedi status"

–The LA Times

At Flow Temple the thrust of our practice is flow, not tricks. Flow is the state of relaxed responsive focus that you feel when you're "in the zone" and ready for anything.

Flow is the state of optimal experience that occurs when your body, mind, and spirit are in dynamic balance. It's what's happening when the Now is so compelling that everything else fades away. Ego and fear dissolve in the perfect moment, time slows down, and whatever you’re doing becomes a meditation. Flow toes the fine line between controlling your actions and obeying your commands.  You know when you're in the flow, and flowing is half the battle. Where will and physics intersect, we hone our own flow.

Flow Arts is what we practice and teach at Flow Temple

Flow Arts is a fast-growing fitness and meditation practice that blends play, exercise and dance into a fun and healthful activity that moves the body, stills the mind and uplifts the spirit. It's a physical workout that is also a brain booster, a relaxing way to chill out, and a compelling performance art.

A peaceful practice with many of the healthful benefits of Martial Arts, Flow Arts improves patience, balance, confidence, dexterity, focus, coordination, body awareness, and self-esteem. It also enhances spatial skills and promotes brain plasticity.

The concept of Flow Arts is simple: learn to move in harmony with an inanimate object so that it becomes an animated extension of your body, then flow with it in ways that look and feel totally awesome. With enough practice, you can learn to flow with almost anything.  Staffs, hoops, batons and even spheres all make wonderful dance partners and teachers once you've grasped each tool's unique dynamics. The basic techniques are easy to pick up, but the adaptations are infinite, allowing for wide variation in personal style and expression.  In the rapidly growing Flow Arts community there is still ample opportunity to make and share novel discoveries.

Students come out of every Flow Arts class session feeling challenged, rewarded, energized and totally excited about how much they have learned and how fast they have progressed. Students make VERY visible and measurable progress every time, and feel good about it.

There are also some lessons to be gleaned from the practice and mastery of these techniques that will serve you well in every area of your life. It's a safe arena in which you can test your limits, expand your comfort zone and train yourself to respond appropriately to challenges.  Perhaps most importantly, it teaches you to learn to love to learn.  The possibilities are endless, and no matter how much you master there are always fresh challenges to inspire you to play at the edge of your ability.

Flow Temple's mission is to introduce Flow Arts to the world and to catalyze its integration into mainstream culture as an accepted and accessible vitality-increasing personal practice like Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Tae Bo, meditation, and Martial Arts.  We've tried many different types of physical and energetic practices, and Flow Arts is the most effective, most fun, most clarifying, most energizing, easiest to stick to system we have found.

At Flow Temple we make awesome for ourselves and those around us. We train, we record, we play, we dance, we spin, we flow. We work together, we play together and we inspire one another.

Part of our training is service.  Please feel free to write to us at Flow Temple.org if you have any comments. Send us your questions in video format, and we'll try to reply in kind.   We'll show you the flow that we know, we'll grow from the flow that you show.  We couldn't do this without all of us.
